In this particular statue, the mudra or position, formed with all five fingers of the right hand is extended to touch the ground. This is the symbol of Buddha's enlightenment when he was meditating under the holy tree in Gaya. He summoned the earth goddess, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment. While his right hand is placed upon the right knee in earth-pressing position, and complemented by the left hand which is held flat in the lap in the dhyana mudra of meditation, is the union of method and wisdom.
